Hello, world! Today is my 8th month anniversary being natural. Let me first start off with saying what going or becoming natural is exactly. I went natural in May of 2010, which means that I cut all the relaxer/ straighter out of my hair. This is called the BC “The big chop”. Transitioning is totally different, it is when you are going natural but still have relaxer at the ends of your hair so you wait until you hair grows out long enough to cut the ends off. I think this is more of people thinking what others might say. Some people are scared that people may look at them the wrong way and criticize. Which I totally understand because that does happen, but you just have to be strong enough person.
I’m not going lie sometimes I love and I dislike being natural. It’s a lot at times, for instance not knowing what to do with your hair especially when you’ve had relaxers all your life. But I get by! I love it because it’s beautiful and soft…some people wouldn’t belief but when I flat iron my hair it gets straighter and softer than when it was relaxed. But here’s the part I dislike. I hate when some of my old friends and even family ask me “Why you decide to go natural?” (in a sarcastic tone)…and says things like you look African (uh, I’m African American …duh!) or why you trying to be all pro-black? But I just ignore because it’s just complete ignorance. I love my natural hair, I love the look, feel, texture, color and curl. Whoever doesn’t…well I guess they will just have to deal with it… Happy 8th month Natural-versary.
In the words of Dr. King “ It is good hair and I accept my hair.”
